What has your journey to Edelman look like?
Before Edelman, I interned and started my comms career at a boutique agency in the heart of Dublin city centre. As it was a small company, I was given a baptism of fire in all things PR and event management – including leading on gaining top-tier media coverage for clients across fashion, health, hospitality, lifestyle and charity sectors.
I moved to London, aka The Big Smoke, in 2014 to see what the city had to offer. It is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made because I soon discovered the world of tech PR through a networking event. From there, I spent two happy years in a tech start-up agency in Shoreditch, working across the likes of Andreessen Horowitz, Klarna, Babylon Health, Wise and Twilio. In this role, I discovered my passion for all things tech, how to bring my entrepreneurial spirit into my work and started building a trusted list of media contacts in the UK.
Edelman is known as the best agency in the world, and I knew from day one in PR school that this was the place where I wanted to grow and perfect my craft. Flash forward to now, I’ve been at Edelman for almost seven years, starting on the brilliant tech team at the beginning of 2016, and I still feel super lucky to work with some of the best minds in our industry daily.
How did you get into the communications industry?
I jumped into Comms via my undergraduate degree in hospitality management. Before this, I didn’t know that PR existed until my second year. I was thrilled to learn that there was a career path I could take where networking with journalists and understanding news had to be a part of my daily life as I’ve been absorbing the news daily since I was six or seven, so I knew that it was the dream job for me.
What achievement are you most proud of?
Thanks to inspirational leadership, mentorship, and above and beyond line management, I created an earned media specialist role for myself here at Edelman. I get to do what I love most: provide strategic counsel to clients about the world of media, speak with journalists and empower the talented team at Edelman to secure top-tier attention for our clients.
I was lucky to be able to explore a career path at Edelman that aligned with my values and goals. To do this, I have had to gain experience, be patient and keep working hard to get to where I am today.
How do you stay motivated?
I stay motivated by working with a team of brilliant and clever people. Both my clients and team inspire me every day to bring my best self to the table. The work produced by our team is outstanding and I’m always proud of how we motivate one another through camaraderie and encouragement to do the best job possible.
Nothing beats the feeling of waking up and being excited to log on to see what media coverage we’ve achieved overnight, read the morning papers with the team and share the good news with our clients.
What do you find most rewarding about the job?
My favourite part of my role is the people that I get to work with. I meet wonderful personalities from all walks of life with different mindsets, interests, skills, talents and opinions.
One of our mottos in tech is that ‘we will always coach’ - I saw this quote framed in the office when I first joined the team and knew that this value was essential for me to experience a rewarding career, and so hearing that I am inspiring our rising star talent at Edelman to explore a career path in earned media is the most rewarding thing for me.
What do you do to relax outside of work?
I’m a bibliophile and find solace in a good book. I’ve also recently learned how to make candles – a hobby that my friends and family are loving.
If you could offer one piece of advice to someone considering a role, what would it be?
Do it, you won't regret it. As well as making friends for life, you’ll gain experience working on the world’s biggest brands, learning from the best along the way.
I’m always happy to have a chat with anyone considering a role at Edelman.
